Outback Talent or a desire to change their life.
Why is it that most of the worlds sporting stars come from the bush, the outer suburbs or from lower socio economic areas?
From Kewell to Cahill, Bogut to Jordan, Rooney and Woods. Then there are the footballers: Cox, Chapman, Ablett, Brown, Selwood, Dunstall, Lockett and Goddard. It seems that those that are truly great in their chosen sport have faced failure and have had to work for what they have achieved. I’m not saying that inner city folk can not or will not make it - of course they can - it’s just that the majority of sports stars world wide seem to come from the middle to lower class. The exception to this would be polo players, and golfers.
Whilst it is an interesting point to ponder, logically it probably reflects a greater choice afforded to those from a wealthy background who may therefore not channel as much energy into a specific discipline. It may also mean that certain individuals do not work as hard towards a specific goal as what they actually desire may be clouded by choice and/or distraction.
From memory, there are not too many sports stars in recent years that have come from Double Bay or Toorak.
